Interview
1994 has brought to public attention the remarkable qualities of a very talented German artist. His name is TEE VAAN of AXIS & REBELS

EDITORS' OPINION

The first thing I saw from Tee Vaan was "Ischarah" - a very promising picture. This girl-portrait, probably drawn with a photo as model, is extremely well carried out when it comes to proportions and colours. The mouth is somewhat dull, though. It is hard to judge this picture technically as it is drawn in hires interlace where one can make rather goodlooking colour transitions without a very good technique.
Tee Vaan also has some work released in Axis' "Big Time Sensuality", but apart from the said "Ischarah" picture that also is included in the demo, there are just average graphics. He has, e.g., tried an Axis logo in Ra style, but failed completely! His technique in lowres is indistinct and makes the graphics look amateurish.
The latest thing I've seen is his title picture for The Charts 13. This picture is in general also dull due to average technique and in this case also rather badly chosen palette: He has used far too few colours for colour transitions. Boring and very simple logo. The eye has some qualities but is nothing special.

A very interesting artist who I find it a bit hard to judge after seeing only few pictures from him. The Ischarah picture from The Party 3 compo was perfectly made in only 16 colours but rather boring. Most of the rest I have seen are typical visual-demodither lo-res pictures.
Tee Vaan seems active which is positive but still I think he needs to give more proof that he should be ranked higher than the low end of the top 20 (like several others by the way...). His competition picture from The Party 4 wasn't my taste and the background must have been very fast made.

BUT WHO'S TEE VAAN?

Tee Vaan: Well, I'm a little german boy, at the age of 18, aeehhh what should I tell you, I'm a really normal one but who believe it? I've been in several groups before to join the two groups, Axis and Rebels, whose I'm actually a member of. I think that my stay in these groups will be definitely long, as I really like both these labels. My job is still to do some little graphics and to do some swap.
The Charts: Do you think to have developed an own particular style? and if yes, how can you define your style?
Tee Vaan: Crrrlt, an own style. I'm not really think to have developed an own style, at the very last you should decide about that. Maybe I would describe the style I use to draw as "Teevaan-style" :) but I don't use any special technic, often I try a new style for a new motif, so I got the possibility to make the picture in the best technic for it.
The Charts: What do you like most to draw? Where do you get inspiration from?
Tee Vaan: Yep, I like mostly to make designs, working with big computers and make things like rave-flyers invitations. For the scene and Amiga I love painting funny things, where people got the possibility to smile. I also love to draw (...) girls and faces even if it is harder to draw a face than a car for example.
The Charts: Could you give us some infos about your amazing "BABY" pic in SWITCHBACK?
Tee Vaan: I saw that picture as a title in a comic-shop, but the book was too expensive to buy it. So I got a non-colored copy after I had a long discussion with the shop-owner. At home, I tried to find some of my children photos, but I wasn't a very good looking kid and also after a long search I couldn't find any pictures from a just-born human. So, I started painting that picture a long time ago, trying initially it in interlace overscan 256 colors. It takes a lot of time to be completed, and especially after my joining in Rebels, I had to speed up in order of SWITCHBACK. So, it became a lo-res picture .
EDITORS' OPINION Unfortunately, I haven't seen that picture, so I suppose I cannot give a justified view of Tee Vaan. Anyway, to me it seems like he has talents when it comes to drawing in general but lacks good technique. He doesn't, in my opinion, deserve his rather high positions in the charts - yet. Tee Vaan has a chance to get a high position on parties competition, as the big screen usually hides an average technique. A picture in the class of and with the distinction of "Ischarah" may be ranked among the ten best! -Electron- Great motif though quite similar to Fairfax' Upstream #8 picture. From that point of view one of the best he has done because there is action in it. But the technique is not the best. Actually the colours look like they are non-AGA but he used 128... The central part of the face is good though. -Mount- TEE VAAN IS BACK!
The Charts: Among all the pictures you've drawn, which you think is the best one and why?
Tee Vaan: At first, I have to point out how there are not so many pictures as anybody think. And about the best, in my eyes the best picture is still a SHIP picture, which is still unreleased. I drew it for a company, and only some of my friends have seen it. But also my contribution for The Party 4 is a great masterpiece of work.
The Charts: Is there a graphician with whom you would like to draw a picture together?
Tee Vaan: YES! For example with JUSSI of OPEN EYES who just came back from the army (welcome back in the scene!). It is hard to work together on one picture, maybe I could make this together with ANGELO of AXIS, but you can do that if you live near to another graphicain... The coop-pictures from WALT and MACK, are another possibility, but I wouldn't like to make a collage in 2 colors, although I was really surprised of the result they have obtained.
The Charts: How you rank yourself in the todays graphical-scene?
Tee Vaan: It is not my task, look in the charts!
The Charts: Is there a picture done from another artist, that you'd liked having pixelled?
Tee Vaan: YES! for example DANNY's (hi!) WINTER QUEEN, I think it must be a work with a lot of fun, also the TEDDY painted by ALEX, just a genius!
The Charts: Tell us the names of some past graphicians that you admire and why.
Tee Vaan: I'm don't look back, I think ... I'm a modern man..???
The Charts: Tell us the names of some today graphicians that you admire and why.
Tee Vaan: There is the great work of DEVILSTAR from de sisters... TRAJAN, CAT and so on. All these graphicians really got it, much talent and nice ideas. I love your work, go on.
The Charts: Tell us about your future projects.
Tee Vaan: Yep what should I tell, I will live a bit, have fun and... ohh yep... there would be a lot of nice productions from both my groups, I will do as lot of graphics I can manage with school, girl and partys. We all see us on the next parties, try to meet me, we can draw a picture together, if we find 5 mins...
Ohh yes then there is also something important! I'm in conections with the biggest German software companys, and I'm still looking for some talented sceners interested in building some projects. We need ideas, so meet me.
The Charts: Ok, thanks for the interview mate, and please keep on entertaining us with your great pictures.
