Interview
For some time J.O.E. topped all graphicians charts, but he quit the scene. But now he is back. RAW was lucky enough to get an interview with J.O.E..

RAW: Why did you leave the scene for a while and why did you come back?
J.O.E.: Some of you have certainly recognized that I disappeared one and a half year ago from the scene. The reason was, that I got my own flat in Graz, the biggest city in Austria, behind Vienna. And so I had more fun in the discotheque, get drunk with friends of mine and drivin' my motorbike, than sittin' in front of my computer in a dark room. The second reason why I faded from the scene was that I started to make music, and the first year my sounds weren't releaseable, so nothing was released by J.O.E.. My return wasn't really volunteerly - in May '91 I had a crash with my motorbike and when I returned home from the surgeontable(?) they told me that I also lost my flat - nice day! So I was back home in our village and had to stay in bed for four (!) weeks. Then I got crutches, and was only able to sit in front of my good ol' Amigo! And so ... J.O.E. is back!
RAW: What is different on the scene today, compared to the period when you was on your most active?
J.O.E.: Oh, there is a big difference between now and the golden old days, when I had my most active time. Now the scene is very professional, and only perfection rulez, I think.
RAW: What do you miss from the old days?
J.O.E.: I miss the original productions like the 'BARBRIAN'-demo from PlasmaForce. I also see that I am now one of the grandpa's of the scene. But I still like it.
RAW: Have the graphic standards improved the last years?
J.O.E.: The graphic-standards improved in the last years, but not very much, because in the beginning there were already good painters like Terminator of Tristar (now TRSI) and Jim Sachs.
RAW: And what about music and code standards?
J.O.E.: I think the music standard improved most in the last time, maybe the reasons are the good tools, new techniques and the growing experience. Of course, the coding improved also, but I am fed up with all thiz vector-shit. Yeah it's quite impressive, but only vectors, that's like I would only draw cubes all the time. Cubes in glass style, in marble style, in plastic style, woolen cubes, chocolate cubes... boring.
RAW: Your latest slideshow 'Laterna Magica' was quite impressive.. How long time did you use to draw the graphics?
J.O.E.: It's interesting, the first question nearly everybody asks me is: How long do you need to paint a picture? I can't say it exactly, it depends on the motif, you can say 1-12 hours. I didn't draw the pictures especially for 'Laterna Magica', I collected them. Some images are nearly 1.5 years old. But some special words about thiz slide: There appeared some rumors that I didn't draw two of the pictures (Barin's Deelite and the tempest background) - who else could have drawn them? If you look at the Cloudbuster-Pic carefully then you will discover the same cloudshade-technique as in the two other pictures - So, whoever spreads this stupid rumors - stop it - it's whacking shit! I also heard similar rumors about UNO (that he buyz his pictures) - I think there are only some jealous guyz talkin' shit about sum fab' people. But they aint gotta chance!
RAW: In that slideshow there stood something about a soon coming production called 'TEMPEST'. Can you tell us some information about that project?
J.O.E.: Yeah! 'TEMPEST' is coming soon! But I am sorry, thiz project is secret! Don't try to get sum' information 'bout it - you wont! The only thing I can say is that it is something you've never seen before!
RAW: Have you ever drawn some animations on the Amiga, and are you going to do it in the future?
J.O.E.: Yes I have, but mainly released in games. But just wait. (Till Tempest arrives? Ed.)
RAW: What would you tell the upcomming graphic artist who have just learnt a few of the secrets of the drawing on the Amiga?
J.O.E.: Work hard, get graphical experience, and avoid girls!
RAW: How on earth did you get the idea to make music?
J.O.E.: I thought: Why not? I always wanted to make music, and there was a time when making graphics didn't satisfy me anymore - and so I started to make some kind of music.
RAW: How would you compare your music capabilities to the graphic capabilities, do you think that you can enter the musicians chart as well?
J.O.E.: I think that I am mainly a graphician, but I like making music, and I use it to relax. And I am a BIT proud of my doublegame. But I also think that I won't enter the music charts - but I would be very happy if I would ...!
RAW: Do you think that doing both music and graphics have some disadvantages or advantages.. Is it too time consuming to do both?
J.O.E.: No I don't think there's any disadvantage in it, because I use one ability to relax from the other, and I've never wanted to make both at the same time. And I also have to say that I'm now spending a little of my sparetime in front of the computer, it's more fun to LIVE!
RAW: At the moment you are working with Luke. Can you tell us who he is and what he has done for Amiga.
J.O.E.: LUKE - his real name is Peter (the same as mine) - is one of my best friends in the scene. He lives in Vienna, he's 21 Years old, got long blonde curling hair and is cool and fast. I like to work with him because it's uncomplicated to cooperate with him. And he also likes a LOT of beer and wine. But the rest of Surprise! Productions is also very nice: Spike (Code, StuntCarRacer), Rick (Huch!) Dangerous (PC-GOD, SurvivalManager), Chrome (well equipped PC-Coder). I like all of them, because there is a big ammount friendship between us, and sum' adventures which hold us together.
RAW: I have heard some romours about you beeing a bike maniac? Is that true?
J.O.E.: YEEAAAHH! I am! Shit! After this accident in May my bike went to the endless Nirvana of motorbikes. It was an Yamaha XJ 650 S. A classic touring bike, without cover. It had 70 PS and was runnin' cool 180 KmH on the highway. It really boosted me through between all the slow cars. But in spring I will buy me another bike. And you all, try to ride a motorbike, it's manifique !
RAW: Who are your best friends in the scene?
J.O.E.: My best friends in the scene are: - All members of S!P in Vienna - Elmer/Symbiosis - nearly as crazy as me, I like his GFX, I like his music and I just luv him and his letters! - Mystik/Anarchy - also a nice pal! - Krest/Anarchy - Bubbler/Sanity - A nice guy, and a good musician. - Enrico/IBB - Jesus/Active - why so INactive? Crazy like me! - Uncle Tom - didn't hear from him for a long time! - GeorgeI/Subway - Quaterback/Energy-Austria - like him very much - Icon/CosmosDesigns - nicest pal I met diz year!!! Also good 64 - Gfx! Quicksilver is it! And sum other guyz you don't know!
RAW: What is your favourite toiletpaper?
J.O.E.: Stupid question, but anyway TATARATA!!! It's: Thank You - Austrian Recycle toiletpaper. Why don't you ask me about my favourite tranquilizers or about my favourite technique to cut my fingernails? (Good idea! Ed.)
RAW: Which is your favourite TVcommercial?
J.O.E.: The '88 commercial of CHARRO - called 'The Beauty Brothers', a spot in B/W with cool organ music and a heartburnin' story!
RAW: Last words?
J.O.E.: Hoho, the famous last words!
